Reforming Welfare

The Economist has a very good summary of the effect the "Welfare to Work" program put in place by Bill Clinton in 1996 has had on welfare claims in the US.

Tough love works

Canadian provinces would be well advised to follow this lead, and use both sanctions and incentives to get people into the workforce and off the public purse.

Mike Harris improved the lot of welfare recipients tremendously when he reformed the system, he gave many of them their dignity and self respect back.

Unfortunately Dolton McGuinty is reversing those reforms by buying votes with welfare payments. He gets the social agencies on the government gravy train and they'll all support him with slick ad campaigns, typically Liberal.

Of course, the best way to encourage welfare recipients to go back to work is to have no welfare.
