On Agricultural Subsidies
The Economist published a very interesting table today, showing that farmers in Canada get a LARGER portion of their income from government support than in the United States. It is still significantly lower than the EU's generous agricultural supports, however.
This should make all people in Canada who claim that our southern neighbour is too blame for farmer's woes. The real answer is to remove the subsidies and price controls and let the free market settle the issue of farming economics.

I'm all for the free market system deciding the price of food. In order for that to be possible farmers need to form cooperatives so they can cut out the middlemen who are ripping off both the farmers on the one end and the consumers on the other.

It all depends on what one considers an agricultural subsidy. If supply management is included then yes, Canadian producers probably do recieve more "subsidies".
I haven't actually read the Economist article so I can't say for sure how they determined what is included in the calculation of subsidies. But it's always important to look at how the figures were calculated and not just what the authors of the articles are trying prove with those numbers.
The milk marketing board should keep prices high in order to keep Coke in business, it's better for kids anyhow.
Milk IS cheap compared to a bottle of Coke (sugar water).
